ACT Expo 2021: Fifth Annual Fleet Awards Honors Green, Sustainable Fleets

At this year’s ACT Expo annual Fleet Awards event, seven fleet operators were recognized for extraordinary accomplishments that serve as examples for fleet operators worldwide, related to emission reduction and sustainability.

“ACT Expo’s Fleet Awards recognize the fleet operators that have gone above and beyond in pursuing advanced clean transportation,” said Erik Neandross, CEO of Gladstein, Neandross & Associates (GNA), a clean transportation and energy consulting firm which hosts ACT Expo. “We had over 250 submissions, with fleets from all over America displaying exciting work.”

The 2021 Fleet Awards were sponsored by the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC).

Awards were presented across seven fleet categories:

Leading Carrier Award: Purolator

In recognition of fleets that are making a difference by helping electrify the supply chain, the 2021 Leading Carrier winner is Purolator, which demonstrated how electric vehicles can maintain uptime and manage the 50% increase in residential deliveries that resulted from the COVID-19 pandemic. Purolator has been deploying all-electric step vans from Motiv Power Systems to complement their fleet of hybrid-electric vehicles.

Purolator Wins ACT Expo Fleet Award in Leading Carrier Category

Demonstrates commitment to a sustainable supply chain by deploying Motiv’s all-electric step-vans

[FOSTER CITY and LONG BEACH Calif., – August 31, 2021] — Motiv Power Systems and Purolator announced today that Purolator won the prestigious Advanced Clean Transportation (ACT) Fleet Award in the carrier category. ACT Expo Fleet Awards recognize fleet operators who show leadership in clean transportation to achieve sustainability in their transportation operations. ACT Expo is North America’s largest advanced transportation technology and clean fleet event.

Purolator, a leading transportation and courier services provider in Canada, deployed Motiv's reliable all-electric class six EPIC step-vans in Vancouver, British Columbia this past March.

“We’re integrating sustainable practices into all areas of our business, and part of this is greening our fleet to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” says said Paul Merrick, General Manager, Western Canada, Purolator. “Additionally, expanding our fleet with new electric vehicles is an environmentally-friendly solution to respond to the increased demand for transportation and courier services resulting from urban growth and the rise of e-commerce.”

Since deploying the electric vehicles in Vancouver earlier this year, Purolator has accrued over 11,000 miles, representing a 9.8 metric ton reduction in tailpipe greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

“Congratulations, Purolator! We are so proud of your commitment and thrilled to be able to partner with you,” said Tim Krauskopf, CEO, Motiv. “With over 4,000 vehicles in your fleet, we are grateful to help one of Canada’s largest carrier companies meet their sustainability goals as we work towards our mission of freeing fleets from fossil fuels.”

In addition to clinching a leading award from a top industry event, Purolator is also involved in North American Council for Freight Efficiency (NACFE) and RMI’s Run on Less – Electric (RoL-E), campaign. RoL-E is a best-of-the-best demonstration that showcases advancements in freight efficiency spread across two countries, demonstrating electric truck technology in everyday operation, commencing in September of 2021. The purpose is to showcase the latest advancements in clean transportation, provide education and best practices in an effort to move the transportation industry toward a clean, sustainable future.

Riding On Electric School Buses (ESBs) Improves Your ABC’s

Decades of public health studies have indicated significant respiratory and cognitive impacts associated with high levels of gas and diesel vehicle emissions. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit and people sheltered at home, we saw a significant reduction in tailpipe emissions, particularly in urban areas where pollution concentrations tend to be the highest.

Fewer tools and techs needed for electric trucks but plenty of service challenges remain

Experts say that electric trucks have far fewer parts and require much less maintenance compared to internal combustion. Naturally, this translates to fewer tools, equipment, parts and even technicians required for service.

While personnel and inventories inside a shop may decline with EVs, the shift will require new tools, equipment and company-wide practices to service these high-tech workhorses.

Curbside-Delivery, Electrified!

As governments and carmakers pledge to be net-zero emissions by at least 2050 – and often before – some fleet companies are doing the same.

Purolator Inc. is making good on its commitment to reach this goal by introducing a fleet of five fully electric curbside-delivery trucks in Vancouver, along with electric-cargo bikes.

The 18-foot curbside trucks have been converted to fully electric by Motiv Power Systems, located in California.

EV tech training ‘all the rage’ as California college pursues all-female EV tech academy to help meet demand

With more all-electric vehicles hitting the road than ever before, industry experts think it’s a good idea to train technicians sooner rather than later, otherwise fleets risk getting left behind.

Some experts also believe that these high-tech, zero-emission workhorses that lean more heavily on firmware updates and laptop interventions than wrenches, can attract more talent, particularly women and others who have traditionally steered clear of internal combustion.

Motiv Powers Purolator Delivery E-Vehicles in Canada

Sporting a six-phase permanent magnet motor for traction applications, fully electric delivery trucks operated by Purolator are the latest additions to the Canadian courier’s fleet of eco-friendly vehicles. Serving the Vancouver area, the 18-ft fully electric curbside delivery vehicles expand the company’s fleet of e-trucks and e-cargo bikes already in use on the streets of Montreal and Toronto.

The trucks are built on Ford’s F-59 platform and electrified by Motiv Power Systems using its Electric Power Intelligent Chassis (EPIC) for delivery vans. The powertrain in the Purolator build provides 230 kW peak power, 308 hp, 2400 torque and 20% gradeability. Purolator’s deployment of the technology marks Motiv’s first collaboration with a company in Canada.
